FAQs about volunteering:
Who?
Anyone over the age of 12 may volunteer. There are a variety of jobs throughout the week and more than 4,000 people-hours are needed to make it all work. The work of volunteers is coordinated by other seasoned volunteers with years of experience at the sale.
How?
E-mail your name, mailing address, e-mail address, phone number and T-shirt size to library.booksale@wakegov.com along with the hours you can work (see above schedule). Please do not send a range of choices for us to decide. You choose the days and hours that you can help at the sale and let us know your specific days and times to assist. A confirmation will be e-mailed just before the sale to remind you of your commitment. If you do not have an e-mail address, please send your information to: 4020 Carya Drive, Raleigh NC 27610. Once at the sale, we have a register for tracking hours spent helping. Please sign in at the register upon entering the sale and sign out before leaving.
Why?
We need e-mail addresses, as it is the easiest and fastest manner in which to communicate with you. Your mailing address will be included for invitations to Wake County’s annual Volunteer Celebration, held each year in late September. Your phone number is needed as a fallback, should other means of communication with you fail. Your personal information is used solely by us and is not shared or distributed with anyone else.
What will I get?
If you are a new volunteer, you may receive a bright orange T-shirt (depending upon budget) to wear while assisting at the sale. The shirt identifies you as a library volunteer, and you may keep it when the sale is over. For a minimum of 4 hours worked, you may select books for purchase at the discounted Saturday prices ($2 per hardbound; 50 cents per paperback – cash or checks only, no credit cards!) Also, your help will make the sale successful. Last year, the library grossed more than $180,000 from the sale and "recycled" more than $185,000 in books (at Saturday prices) back to Wake County Public Schools and other Wake County agencies.
What will I do?
During the week of the sale, jobs include, but are not limited to: unpacking books, sorting books by author or subject, straightening tables of books, cashiering, answering questions, patrolling the restrooms and volunteer break room, handing out maps and bags and boxes, collecting shopping carts, and cleaning up as the sale draws to a close. Think about what you’d like to do, and we will try to accommodate your interests.
Can I receive community service credit for volunteering at the sale?
Yes, we have a form that can be completed to show proof of your volunteer hours, or we can mail a letter to the appropriate place after the conclusion of the sale. Make sure you let us know if your work is to be calculated for community service credit.
