What is this all about?

The servers that host the majority of Wake County Public Libraries’ online and network-dependent services such as the catalog, databases, custom web content, etc. will be moving to a new home with improved power backup and data recovery.

What services will be AVAILABLE during the move?

  • You can check out books in the library as long as you bring your library card. (We will be unable to look up accounts using Drivers’ Licenses or other information.)
  • You will still be able to get eBooks and eAudio by going directly to the Overdrive website.
  • You will still be able to use the Public PCs and Public Printers in the libraries.
  • You will be able to use some of our online request services: Conference Room Requests; Suggest a Purchase; Book Club Kit Requests.  


What services will NOT BE AVAILABLE during the move?

  • While you will be able to check out books, we cannot check in any books during the move. But we will be extending the due dates for items due during the move so that you won’t get overdue fees related to the move, and we will have less checking in to catch up on! 
  • No requests can be placed on physical books at this time.
  • The BRiAN online catalog will not be available.
  • Databases will not be accessible.
  • The request forms for Adult Professional Services such as Get that Job!, Device Advice, etc. will be unavailable.
  • We think this covers most of it, but we can’t guarantee this is an exhaustive list! If you find something that isn’t working during this time that is not listed here, please let us know.

Why are we doing this?

Our existing datacenter is outdated. The datacenter where the servers will live after the move will allow us to stay up much longer in the case of power outages. It will also make it easier to keep our server security up to date, and provide more robust data backup and recovery.


Where is this happening?
This will affect services in all of the libraries, in addition to our online services. While we have a backup system for checking out books, the software we use to process check-ins and holds is dependent on the servers being up. We will do our best to complete the move as quickly as possible, but we do want to be cautious and thorough!


How can I help?
As mentioned above, we will be extending due dates for books that would normally be returned during the server movement system outage, because we will not be able to check them in until the movement is done. You can help by keeping your books longer! That way we will have less of a backlog to check in, and you will have more time to enjoy your books!


When is this happening?
The movement will be taking place starting on the evening of Thursday, June 29, and finishing sometime the following day, assuming all goes well.
