Question:

How do I obtain a permit for a deck?
Answer:
The same as that for a dwelling; from our website and from the development brochures: Acquiring a permit for a deck for single-family home requires submittal of an application for residential permit, a site plan containing the items listed below under Site Plan Requirements, and two sets of plans with the information listed in Residential Plan Submittal Requirements. If the deck will be constructed on a lot that is not located in a major subdivision, a copy of the recorded plat for that particular property may be required.

Question:

I bought my house as a four-bedroom house. I am trying to sell the house as a four-bedroom but found out that the previous owner added the fourth bedroom without a permit. What is the process and requirements to obtain a permit?

Answer:

Each case is unique; contact Plan Review at 919-856-6234. In addition, since septic systems are sized according to the number of bedrooms, Environmental Services will need to verify (by the original septic permit) that the septic system is adequately sized for four bedrooms.

Question:

How long will it take to get my permit?

  Answer:

(New house, under-roof construction, addition, bedroom addition) This has too many variables that are not under PDI control (i.e., how far out is E.S. on field work, are the construction plans prepared by a professional, is the lot recorded in the current owner’s name, are flood-prone soils present, etc.) If we only consider PDI, then the time frame is as follows: house – no more than five business days; under-roof construction – 1 hour; addition – 1 hour; bedroom addition – 1 hour.
