Medicaid is a health insurance program that serves children, adults and families.

Family and Children's Medicaid covers children, parents, pregnant women and family planning services. Adult Medicaid covers aged, blind and disabled individuals.

NOTICE: Hawkins v. Cohen (5:17-CV-581 E.D.N.C.) is a federal lawsuit filed in 2017 on behalf of Medicaid beneficiaries in North Carolina. The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of N.C. has ordered the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services and all 100 county departments of social services to stop terminations or reductions of Medicaid benefits until eligibility under all Medicaid categories has been considered and proper notice of the termination has been sent.​

There are several ways to find a Medicaid doctor, dentist or other medical provider. Before you make 

an appointment, be sure to ask if the provider still takes Medicaid patients. The NC Department of Health and Human Services maintains several Medicaid Provider Lists including primary care providers, dentists, mental health providers and
Medicaid specialists.
