Cool for Wake is a seasonal heat relief program that provides free fans to vulnerable citizens who are adversely affected by extreme summer temperatures. Cool for Wake begins in May of each year and runs through mid-September.

The Cool for Wake season is made possible in part through the generosity of the Raleigh Regional Association of Realtors'
"Realtors Cooling Wake"

Through the generosity of community donors, and supplemented by an annual grant from the Duke Energy Foundation, the program consists of the following components:

Households without air conditioning that contain a senior citizen (60+) and/or children under age 12 may request to receive a fan through their social worker or Service Intake. Qualifying households will be issued one 20-inch box fan per household per year.
Please note: Households with air conditioning should not be referred for fans unless the air conditioner is not working.

Air Conditioners

Each year, a limited number of window-unit air conditioners are available to seniors and children who have a documented medical history of chronic illness affecting their respiratory system (emphysema, COPD, HIV, asthma, etc.). Requests for these units must be accompanied by a written statement from the applicant's physician.
