mother and childPediatric Developmental Surveillance Program

A collaborative initiative of  Wake County Human Services, Wake County Smart Start and  Pediatric Practices

The Pediatric Developmental surveillance Model offers developmental surveillance to children, 0-5 years, in an effort to support learning readiness. Developmental Specialists use validated screening tools (e.g., PEDS Response, Ages and Stages, Brigance) offering training, consultation and implementation in Pediatric and Family Medicine Practices.

Research shows:

          • 15% to 18% of all children have developmental or behavioral disabilities. (Boyle, et al., Pediatrics 93:399, 1994)
          • Fewer than 30% of children with serious developmental or behavioral disabilities are detected by their primary healthcare provider before entering school. (Palfrey et al., Journal of Pediatrics 111: 651, 1994)
          • Developmental surveillance with good developmental or behavioral screening tools improves detection rates two- to threefold.(Glascoe, et al., Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics 14:344, 1993)
