Immunizations
Disease prevention is the key to public health, as it is always better to prevent a disease than to treat one. Vaccination is one of the greatest achievements in the history of medicine, as many diseases that once caused death and disability have been eliminated or are rarely seen in the United States. Immunizations are still a very important part of healthcare today so that these diseases do not return.
Measuring the percentage of people immunized in a community is one effective way to measure the health of that community. Thus, the immunization rate is an important part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Healthy People 2010 measures of healthy communities. Wake County is proud to have achieved its goal of having 90% of 2-year-olds age-appropriately immunized.
Wake County Human Services implemented the North Carolina Immunization Registry in 2005. This registry is now operational in all North Carolina health departments. In the next several years, Human Services' immunization staff will help both hospitals and private healthcare providers implement the registry in their day-to-day operations. The registry helps healthcare providers by recording immunizations as they are given, providing a current, accurate immunization history for their clients while also managing vaccine supplies.
