Over-the-Counter (OTC) Medicines Approved for Use During Pregnancy

Symptoms Medication
Constipation
  • First, increase fiber in your diet and drink more water. If that does not help, then try Colace (ducosate calcium or ducosate sodium), Peri-colace or Metamucil.
Cough
  • Robitussin DM* or plain Robitussin* (*Do not use if you have diabetes.)
  • Any cough drops
  • Robitussin Cold & liquid gels
Fever
  • Call the clinic.
Headaches
  • Tylenol Regular or Extra-Strength (Call the clinic if you have blurred vision, spots before your eyes or other visual disturbances like flashing lights.)
Hemorrhoids
  • Preparation H, Tucks or Anusol (follow label instructions)
Sore Throat
  • Any throat lozenge (e.g., Sucrets)
  • Chloraseptic spray*
Indigestion
  • Tums, Mylanta, Rolaids, Maalox or Riopan
Nasal Congestion
  • Benadryl or Claritin over the counter (loratadine)
    Follow directions—not recommended for people with history of high blood pressure.
Nausea & Vomiting
  • Call the clinic.
Painful Urination
  • Call the clinic.
Skin Rash
  • Cortaid Cream (1% hydrocortisone)
Vaginal Discharge, Odor or Irritation
  • Call the clinic.
