Smart Activities

Mother with a childSmart Activities for your 3-, 4- & 5-year-old

Parents are the child's first teacher. Each moment you share together is a learning opportunity. Parents are teaching their children how to relate to others, how to communicate and how to be a lifelong learner.

Below are ideas to help parents get started:

Crayons and Paper

  • Encourage your child to draw freely on paper.
  • Encourage your child to draw different shapes or try and write the letters of his/her name.
  • Find different textures and items (leaves, coins, cut up pieces of paper) that your child can use to create a rubbing. (Place items under the paper and use the side of the crayon.)

Books

  • Reading is the most important thing you can do with your child.
  • Identify the front and back of the book
  • Identify the title, author and illustrator
  • Point to words while you read
  • Ask questions such as, "What happened?"; "Who did that?"; "What do you think will happen next?"

Playdough

  • Playdough is wonderful for developing hand strength.
  • Roll the playdough into various shapes.
