Cool 4 Wake

Cool for Wake is a seasonal heat relief program that provides free fans to vulnerable citizens who are adversely affected by extreme summer temperatures. The program begins on May 1 of each year and runs through mid-September.

Funded by the generosity of community donors, and supplemented by an annual grant from Progress Energy, Cool for Wake consists of the following components:

Fans

Households that contain a senior citizen (60+) and/or children under age 12 may request to receive a fan through their social worker or Service Intake. Qualifying households will be issued one 20-inch box fan per household per year. (Please note: Households with air conditioning should not be referred for fans, unless the air conditioner is not working.)

Air Conditioners

Each year, a limited number of window-unit air conditioners are available to seniors and children who have a documented medical history of chronic illness affecting their respiratory system (emphysema, COPD, HIV, asthma, etc.). Requests for these units must be accompanied by a written statement from the applicant's physician.
