Developmental Disabilities Services


Wake LME contracts with a network of agencies in our community to provide services to individuals with developmental disabilities. Should you, or someone you know, need developmental disability services, please contact the Wake LME Access Center at 919-250-3133.

What services are available?

Case Management is guidance from a qualified professional to ensure the person gets the types of services needed.
Skill Development is assistance/training to help individuals attain the skills necessary to live as successfully and independently as possible.
Vocational Supports include long-term vocational support to help a person maintain competitive employment or adult developmental vocational program (ADVP) for those not interested, ready or able to work competitively.
Residential Supports include an array of options from semi-independent to group living depending on level of need and preference.

Who is eligible?

Wake County residents, age 3 and older, whose condition meets the state definition of a "Developmental Disability" [NC General Statutes G.S. 111c-3 (12a)]

A copy of an evaluation by a professional who has diagnosed the developmental disability is required. This is most often a Psychological Evaluation.

How are services funded?

Federal, state, and local funds are allocated to each Local Management Entity (LME) to pay for services. It is the responsibility of the LME to authorize services and manage funds for services.
Medicaid is public health insurance available to individuals who are disabled and who meet certain income restrictions. Medicaid may pay for some developmental disabilities services. To apply for Medicaid, contact Wake County Human Services' Medicaid office at 919-212-7000.
CAP-MR/DD (Community Alternative Program for people with mental retardation/developmental disabilities) is a NC Medicaid waiver program for individuals who need ICF-MR (Intermediate Care Facility) level of care and can safely live in the community within available resource limits set by Medicaid. 
Fee for Service: For individuals and families of minors whose household income exceeds 400% of poverty, there may be a fee for services assessed.  Exceptions may be requested.
