The Drop In Center Card Group is a consumer staffed vocational group composed of clients of Wake County Human Services Psychosocial Rehab Programs and Adult Community Treatment Teams. All participants live with a severe and persistent mental illness, and many have been homeless.
The program was created to provide an opportunity for employment for consumers whose illnesses limit their participation in competitive employment, yet their motivation for work is exceptional.
The participants work in a team environment to produce greeting cards. They use various craft techniques to create each card individually. Each member is trained in every aspect of producing the cards and is assigned tasks according to interest and skill areas. Participants are guided by a WCHS staff person and work on a regular schedule. They are paid by the profits generated from selling the cards in the community.
The Drop In Center Card Group strives to provide consumers an opportunity to reach their employment goals while learning marketable job skills. Participants are able to express themselves creatively while learning marketable job skills. Participants are able to express themselves creatively while sharing in the pride and self-esteem that results from working.
