Building or Remodeling a Facility

Whether you are Building a New Facility or Remodeling an Existing one, the Wake County Plan Review Section of the Environmental Services Department reviews all facility plans for approval prior to construction. Plans are reviewed at the building inspections department where the facility will be built. Wake County will review the plans simultaneously with the building inspections department. Please refer to the Facility plan review matrix to determine if your facility requires an environmental health plan review.

Plans must be submitted with the necessary paperwork (see checklist below) to the local Wake County municipality that will issue building permits for the project (Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, Morrisville, Garner, Wake Forest, Wendell, Knightdale, Rolesville or Zebulon). Projects located in unincorporated areas of Wake County must be submitted to the Wake County Inspections/Plans/Development Permits Division. Be certain to verify the municipal jurisdiction for the property.

Verify the jurisdiction of wastewater disposal and water supply and refer to the controlling authority for special requirements such as grease trap sizing and well construction requirements.

Plans must be submitted with the following:

  • Complete set of plans drawn to scale showing the placement of each piece of food service equipment, storage areas and trash can wash facilities. Plans must also include general plumbing, electrical, mechanical and lighting drawings and room finish schedules.
  • A site plan locating exterior equipment, such as dumpsters and walk-ins
  • Manufacturer specification sheets for each piece of new equipment
  • Completed Food Service Plan Review Application
  • Proposed menu
  • $200 Plan Review Fee for Food Service Facilities
