Advanced Cardiac Life Support

7/27/2006

The Wake County EMS System was the first in the State to offer Advanced Cardiac Life Support for Experienced Providers (ACLS-EP) to all of its 260 advanced life support personnel. "ACLS-EP is an alternative for seasoned ACLS providers who wish to renew their provider status," said Don Garner, Jr,. Professional Development Coordinator for the Wake County EMS System.

The course teaches experienced providers new information on how to assess and manage critical cardiovascular emergencies not currently addressed in ACLS. "Our providers are extremely proficient with handling patients in cardiac arrest, which is what the regular ACLS course focuses on," Garner stated. "This course allows us to focus on those situations and conditions where our patients are not in cardiac arrest." "This area of focus provided our personnel with the education and tools they needed to prevent critical cardiac patients from going into cardiac arrest."

The education took place during regularly scheduled continuing education dates in January and February.
