EMS Recognizes Aquatic Staff

Seven staff members of the Pullen Aquatic Center were recognized on Saturday, June 29, at 5:30 p.m., by Wake County EMS for outstanding performance in the rescue and resuscitation of a Raleigh man last month. The Center is located at 410 Ashe Ave. in Raleigh.

On Friday, June 23, staff members discovered a man face-down at the bottom of a 14-foot-deep section of the pool. They pulled him from the water, confirmed he had no pulse and immediately started cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Other staff members simultaneously prepared the automated external defibrillator (AED), a life-saving device that can restore a heartbeat in certain situation, while another member called 911 for help.

Many people train to use CPR and AEDs. Fortunately, not everyone has to use those skills. The Pullen Aquatic Center staff members' superb execution of those very skills is almost certainly directly responsible for the saving the swimmer's life. It is vital that the general public learn CPR and learn how to use an AED. The Pullen Aquatic Center staff provided an outstanding example of how important these relatively simple skills are.
