What You Can Do

The Wake County EMS System needs your assistance as we continue to strengthen the links in the Chain of Survival. Here are some suggestions:

1. Call 9-1-1 at the first sign of trouble. While 50% of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) victims have no warning symptoms, the other 50% typically experience chest pain, shortness of breath, and/or lightheadedness/fainting just prior the SCA event. If you or someone you know experiences these symptoms, call 9-1-1 immediately.
2. Learn CPR and how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Even if you don't own an AED or have one in your place of business, you may find one available in a mall, airport, or similar venue.
3. Register your AED if you own one. During the emotional stress that surrounds an SCA event, bystanders may forget to use an AED, even if one is nearby. By registering your AED, the location will be programmed into the Computer Assisted Dispatch (CAD) at the 9-1-1 centers. This will allow the Emergency Medical Dispatcher to remind a caller to retrieve the AED and use it when it is needed most.
4. Learn more about AEDs and consider placement of an AED in your place of business.
