The Chief of Support Services' responsibilities include overseeing logistics, technology, fleet, facilities and preparedness. He has dedicated staff for logistics and technology, and he partners with district chiefs and other Wake County departments to manage fleet and facilities.
Chief Zalkin's preparedness duties include planning for disasters, drills and surge capacity. His work relies on collaboration with multiple partnering agencies. He currently serves on the Wake County Domestic Preparedness Task Force, North Carolina Domestic Preparedness Planning Region #4, and the North Carolina Ambulance Strike Team.
Joseph Zalkin has a BS with a concentration in Emergency Medical Care from Western Carolina University. He has been a member of Wake County EMS since November 1981. He was first hired by then-director Gerald Y. Brown as Training Coordinator to lead the department from the basic Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) level to the paramedic level of care. Much of his career has included training and professional development for the department. He has also served as Interim Department Director.
