The Wake County Department of EMS is restructuring leadership and will soon be headed by the position of Medical Director. The Medical Director will delegate administrative duties to the EMS Director. The EMS Director will be supported by five Deputy Directors, each of whom now oversee specific functions and staff.
During the vacancy period, however, the department is headed by Interim Director Christopher Colangelo, while Dr. Jefferson Williams is serving as Interim Medical Director.

Deputy Director responsibilities, coordination and oversight:
Operations – Paramedics, EMS Techs, Field Training Officers (FTOs), District Chiefs and Special Operations.
Support Services – Logistics, Technology, fleet, facilities, EMS subscriptions, and preparedness.
Professional Development – Training, Continuing Medical Education, patient care simulation and EMS academies.
Executive Officer – Budget, finance, billing, human resources, contracts, ambulance franchises, scheduling, community outreach, public information.
Clinical Affairs – Continuous Quality Improvement, research and data analysis, coordination of the Deputy Medical Director, EMS Fellowships, District Chief 9 and the Advanced Practice Paramedic (APP) program.
