Spencer Shell, a junior in political science at N.C. State, decided to go for a run around campus. Jon Smetana and Robert Olson saw Spencer collapse. He was in Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).
Olson and Smetana began CPR, a lifesaving skill Smetana had learned just two weeks before. They called 911 and Wake County EMS along with first responders from Raleigh Fire Department and N.C. State Public Safety were able to restore normal function to Spencer's heart.
After a 15-day hospital stay and several weeks of recovery, Spencer returned to his studies.
