Emergency Management

The Division of Emergency Management’s objective is to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from or mitigate against threatened or actual natural disasters, acts of terrorism or other manmade disasters.

What do we do?

  • Coordinate with community partners to identify ways to effectively mitigate, prepare for, respond to and recover from significant events.
  • Coordinate the Local Emergency Planning Committee.
  • Oversee the Harris Nuclear Plant program.
  • Respond to emergencies on a 24/7 basis.
  • Explore and implement emergency technology programs.
  • Situational monitoring for threats and hazards.
  • Provide leadership for regional systems and programs.

Assist Residents

To assist residents during an emergency, a phone bank is set up in the EOC to handle requests for special assistance, receive reports of property damage, power outages and street blockings or closings. If you are in need of assistance with any of these items during an emergency, you should call 919-856-7044.

Wake County Emergency Management, in cooperation with Wake County Human Services and the American Red Cross, opens emergency shelters and reception centers when disasters force residents to evacuate.

Provide Training for Disaster Response

Wake County provides training and educational programs for emergency response agencies, business and industry, and the general public. These programs, offered through our Emergency Management Division, cover such topics as hazardous materials response, search operations, incident command, radiological events and recovery operations.
