Register of Deeds
The primary responsibilities of the Register of Deeds Office are to record, maintain and make available to the general public real estate documents, Uniform Commercial Code (UCCs) and other documents on file in the Office. Staff also issues marriage licenses, administers notary oaths, and maintains records of armed forces discharges. This office also is required to abide by the statutory requirements that documents be either on a temporary or permanent index within 24 hours. Documents must be fully indexed on the permanent index within 30 days of the initial recordation. Other duties include assisting walk-in customers, responding to telephone inquiries and ensuring easy retrieval or viewing of legible documents and maps.
