Emergency Medical Services

EMS Paramedic badgeWake County Emergency Medical Services is a County-operated EMS agency that provides advanced life support (ALS) emergency medical care 24 hours per day. EMS operates sixteen (16) dual-paramedic ambulances around the clock, as well as three peak-activity ambulances 12 hours per day. In addition, there are five Advanced Practice Paramedic (APP) units in service during the day and two APP units through the night.  APPs augment paramedic ambulance response on critical calls, perform home visits on certain high-risk patient populations, and facilitate transport to alternative destinations when the hospital emergency department is not the most appropriate facility for a given patient.

EMS serves the municipalities of Wake Forest, Raleigh, Fuquay-Varina and Holly Springs, as well as the Fairview community and portions of unincorporated Wake County. In 2006 EMS responded to 46,000 requests for service and transported 34,000 patients. Wake County paramedics employ state of the art medical technology, including 12-lead ECGs, capnography, and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines.

There are three EMS District Chiefs on duty around the clock, and the Major Incident Support Unit, EMS TRUCK 1, is always on call.
