What is the Census?
Every 10 years, the U.S. Census Bureau conducts a headcount of every person living in the United States, as mandated by the U.S. Constitution.
In addition to determining Congressional representation, the Census helps describe who we are as a county, state and nation.
All responses are confidential and protected by law.
Why is the census process important to Wake County?
- Allocations for Wake County's budget (federal and state funds).
- Census count determines distribution of more than $300 billion in federal funds annually (schools, human services, healthcare, etc.).
- Census count used by the state of North Carolina to determine the allocation of state funds.
- The County and municipalities use census information to plan, allocate funds, determine location of police/fire departments, and for many other projects.
