These are among the most frequently asked questions regarding the City-County Bureau of Identification (CCBI).
Q. My neighbor was arrested for drunk driving and wants me to be a witness to his breath test. Where do I go?
A. He is being held in a limited access area of CCBI in the first floor of the Public Safety Center. You should respond to the Public Safety Center at 330 S. Salisbury St. Enter the main entrance foyer and proceed to the back right wall, where you will find a dedicated telephone. Contact the arresting law enforcement officer with this phone, and someone will escort you to the testing area.
Q. I am hiring some new people for my company and want to know if they have a record in Wake County. How can I determine if they have a criminal record?
A. Go to the CCBI office on the second floor of the Public Safety Center and give the names to the receptionist or have her direct you to the public access terminal for your record inquiries. With our public access services, you may be able to obtain the needed information on your own.
Q. Are CCBI employees sworn law enforcement officers?
A. Our department consists of a combination of sworn and non-sworn individuals. The Director, Deputy Directors, Crime Scene Agents, Drug Chemist, the Latent Print Supervisor and the Evidence Technician are all vested with the arrest authority of the deputy sheriffs. Identification technicians and other administrative personnel are in non-sworn positions.
Q. I see all kinds of high-tech police procedures and technology on television. Does CCBI use such equipment when conducting a crime scene investigation?
A. CCBI uses a various array of evidence detection equipment and processing techniques. We use state-of-the art equipment in both the field and in our forensic laboratory.
