The Raleigh/Wake City-County Bureau of Identification was established by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1937 in an effort to provide for better enforcement of criminal laws in Wake County. This specialized fingerprint identification bureau functions as an independent agency ensuring the highest level of forensic services are provided to support the criminal justice system of Wake County.

Mission Statement:

The Raleigh/Wake City-County Bureau of Identification will continuously strive for perfection while setting the highest standards in crime scene investigation, forensic analysis of evidence, and collection of criminal arrest information.

Divisions of CCBI:

The Investigations Division is responsible for responding to requests for crime scene investigations by Wake County law enforcement agencies.

The Crime Laboratory Division maintains an evidence-receiving unit and  is responsible for analyzing evidence for the following forensic disciplines:

  • Impression evidence (fingerprints, palmprints and footwear)
  • Forensic drug chemistry
  • Blood alcohol analysis
  • Blood drug analysis
  • Digital evidence analysis
  • Forensic photography

The Support Services Division provides civil fingerprinting and criminal arrest records. This Division is also tasked with fingerprinting and photographing all individuals charged with a criminal offense in Wake County.
